LARC 2021 Winter Series
LARC Winter #1 by UYC
Sunday Jan 10, 2021
The next 3 races in the LARC winter series will be: #2 sponsored by BFSC will be Sat, Jan 23, #3 will be on Sat Feb 13 and the last race on Sat Feb 27. Skipper’s meeting at 11am at Aqualand. I will attempt to broadcast skipper’s meeting on ch 69.
This first race of the year was anticlimactic. The weather built us up to anticipate a great weekend. Once the rain quit on Friday after 2 very depressing days (though they were warmer), then the cold air really crept in and the wind howled all day Saturday with just enough sunshine to make us think we were going to have a great race on Sunday. It was looking good at the skipper’s meeting with a nice wind and the sun starting to take of the chill out of the outdoor air. And then as race time approached the wind starts to do a dramatic shift to the west. The race committee sets a course to the new conditions and then the wind drops to a whisper (I forgot to put money in the wind bank). I am now worried that there will be enough wind to make it to ANY weather mark! Fortunately the race committee from UYC, Kent Rogers, Edith Collins, and Susan Reddaway recognized the futility of trying to start a race in these conditions and abandoned the race.
The next race will be this Sat, Jan 23 and at this time the weather forecast for is 56 degrees and looking good. I hope to see everyone on the race course. Dana

LARC 2020 Fall Series
LARC Fall #1 by SSC
September 13, 2020
Hurricanes have never made such an impact for such a long period of time as we have had this year so far. If it’s not Isaias, or Laura, then it is Sally. Seems like it would be bad karma to have a hurricane named after you. But I must have put enough money in the wind meter because even though the weekend started with a drizzle, we ended with a gorgeous weather on Sunday.
Jim Chambers, as usual, prescribed a great WL course of 7.78 miles. Unfortunately with the absence of 11 (COE) and R, there wasn’t too many choices of a course other than T to D and back again several times. But it was an enjoyable race because the wind conditions changed considerably between each leg so that you couldn’t always predict the favored side.
Many people were hesitant about the weather on Sunday, after the rain all day Saturday. By the time the skipper’s meeting at 11am, the sun was out and it was blowing 5-7 mph all day. It was a great race day and a beautiful beginning of the Fall season.
This was the order of the finishes:
1. Mike Stewart/Mike R on the J-88
2. Dana Stewart on J-24
3. Walter Addison on J-27
4. Robin Terrell on Capri 22
5. Spencer Gay on Hunter 34
6. Jim Chambers on Beneteau 28.5
7. Fred Kempner on Hunter 37.5
8. Kathy Paes/Tom Beauchamp/Erin on Islander 40
Thanks to all the skippers, crews and the wind gods that made this such an outstanding start to the Fall sailing season. The next LARC race will be on Sunday, Sept 27 by BFSC with a pursuit start and the skipper’s meeting at Aqualand at 11am.

LARC 2020 Summer Series
LARC After Dark Moonlight Series Race 4
August 29, 2020
One of the participants said to me “it was a great race except for the lulls”, as he said this I thought “it was a great race except for the motorboat waves”. But Saturday was definitely anticlimactic after the tumultuous week of tracking Hurricane Laura and wondering how much she was going to affect our weather. The days before this race the weather had been a very dark, hot and humid but in usual Lake Lanier style, the weather changed on a dime and we had bright windy day for our pre-race celebration.
The weather ended up being perfect as we toasted Jim Chambers and his new boat “Wind Spinner” a Beneteau 28.5 and K.C.Shannon and Fairway Mortgage Co. presented a check to Jim. A big thanks to Will Brown, Tommy Sawchuk and Jonathan Stewart for helping to set this up and providing a great meal. And Jonathan Stewart who was gracious enough to step up as RC for this race. As I have done this entire series I texted the start time and course to all participants that provided info.
On our way to 11 on this beautiful moonlit night, we saw a couple of interesting sights. The first was the masked Man who ran aground at 13, this remains a mystery and we timed the race perfectly so that we passed Margaritaville and the fireworks on our way back to 13. What a great sight, too bad my spinnaker flyer was facing the wrong way and missed it!!! Thanks to Daniel Postel and Pat Finnick for placing a LARGE temporary mark at 11 for this race.
This is the order of the finishes:
1 Brent McKenzie
2 Mike Krantz/Rebecca Barkley
3 Davis Macleod
4 Tommy Sawchuk
5 Dana Stewart
6 Linda Webster
7 Stefan Schulze
8 Chris Webster
9 David Jackson
10 Rick Proffitt
11 Francois Rivard
12 Kyle Meyhoefer
13 Tedd Meinersmann
14 Spencer Gay
15 Randy Phillips
16 Mike Blanchard
17 Kathy Paes/ T.Beacham
18 Jim Chambers
19 Harry/Karen Huff
20 Matt Geiger
We are suddenly in the Fall racing season. LARC Fall #1 will be Sunday, Sept 13 and Fall #2 will be on Sunday, Sept 27. This first race will be sponsored by SSC and we will have the skipper’s meeting at 11am at Aqualand, PigTails parking lot and/or you can notify me by text message (404/849-1809) with 1. Your name 2. Boat type/name 3. Sail # 4. PHRF rating 5. Spin or non/ cruiser. I will text start time, course, SF, MT by noon.
With the advent of the Fall season, we normally have a post race “dirt up” at X dock Aqualand, but things are different this year. Please contact me if you and crew might come to X dock for the “dirt up” on Sunday after the race.
Look forward to seeing everyone this weekend, Dana
A brief note about the scores, the Small sport/Melges 24 fleet only sailed 2 races and therefore do not get a throw out like all the other fleets.
Here are the Overall Results of small sport/Melges 24 fleet:

LARC after Dark
Moonlight Race series
Aug 1, 2020
What a fun filled evening, how many nights can you see the International Space Station, fireworks, lightning and a full moon during the same race? Only in a Moonlight race. A big thanks to Jim Chambers (sorry about the storm damage to your boat) and SSC for hosting this awesome night race by LARC. We had an 8 mile course that sent us to 11 and back. By the way, did everyone go around imaginary 11? Many of us have GPS or other mapping programs to tell us where 11 should be, but Pat Finnick (thank you) motored out to show us the location.
Despite all the distractions going on, it was challenging keeping up with the shifts and trimming the sails constantly, especially downwind. But what I discovered is that I really love boats that have lights on their masthead fly. Even though we had the gorgeous full moon, it was still tough to keep up with the shifts and even harder to see the telltales (do they make nightglow telltales). After those big monsters passed me (30+ foot boats) with their masthead lights, they made it so easy to determine the location of the next mark.
Our next and last moonlight race will be on Sat, Aug 29; skipper’s meeting at 6pm at Aqualand.
Here is the order of our finishers:
1 Mike Krantz
2 Roger Counihan
3 Davis Macleod
4 Tommy Sawchuk
5 Bruce Barton
6 Chris Webster
7 Linda Webster
8 Dana Stewart
9 Jim Chambers
10 Robin Terrell
11 Randy Philllips
12 Harry Huff
13 Mike Blanchard
14 Chris Jackson
Congratulations to everyone for your awesome performance.
Don’t forget we are not only competing against our fleet members, but at the end of the year I will also announce the fleet champion for each club.

Moonlight madness might be a good descriptor of Sat. night’s race.
Moonlight madness, sounds like a disease of the full moon. But it does describe sailors who like to sail in better winds than are usual during the normal southern summer day and avoid as much as motorboat traffic as possible. Those sailors have Moonlight Madness and on Saturday, June 27 we had the perfect evening to soothe those jangled nerves. And the best thing yet, it is free to all members of the 4 sailing clubs.
This Saturday started hazy. At noon all you could see was a golden dust haze everywhere. But we had a great wind blowing and it swept the miasma away which gave way to a bright and partly cloudy day. Then as the time of the skipper’s meeting time approached, we had a h*** of a storm. We held the skipper’s meeting as planned (in the rain) and fortunately PigTails allowed us a corner of the room to stay dry. Ted Meinersmann of BFSC set up a great 5.67 mile course to H and back, with a couple of detours around D. This was a new age skipper’s meeting, I texted everyone the course, distance and their start time. Then like magic an hour before the race the rain quit, the sun came out and we had a beautiful breeze.
I want to especially thank our thoughtful friends of John McCarthy and Pat Finnick for taking the time to follow us around the race course and make sure we were all safe.
We had several contests during this evening. Because this was a pursuit race, the slower boats started first and the faster boats started last. The first leg was upwind to D and the first to round the mark had to decide which way to go around D island. I rounded the windward mark and chose not to go through the cut on the west side of D island while most of the rest of the fleet went through the cut. It is a terrible feeling being in the lead and watching the fleet diverge and wondering if you made the right choice.
All sailors usually target a boat they want to beat during a race, mine for this race was Davis Macleod and his awesome team of athletic young sailors. Davis takes the lead going around H mark but I finally overtake him with my spinnaker. But the Band of Brothers (Davis) finally take me down at D mark when the end of my spinnaker comes off (D*** duct tape). Davis and his team in Wave Bye SR in his dad’s Elliott 770 beat me by a whisker.
There was a fierce rivalry between the two BIG red boats , I didn’t see much of that contest but considering the skippers and crew on board both boats, I would have loved an audio tape of that contest.
The other notable race was between the Cruisers, Hen House and Damphino. I wondered if getting his kids home to bed was motivation for Ben to win the race and head home with his family.
Thanks to everyone for sharing one of the most enjoyable races I have ever sailed. We had cool temperatures, nice wind and a great course and almost NO motorboats.
Look forward to seeing everyone at the next Moonlight race on Sat Aug 1.
Stay cool, Dana

LARC 2019 FALL SERIES RESULTS
What a great day, not that windy but if you went hunting for the wind you were rewarded for your efforts. But what made it a great day was the 17 boats that came out for this first LARC race of the Fall 2019 series. There was a very strong showing from the Barefoot and SSC sailors. It was great to see such an enthusiastic crowd. A special thanks to Bird Fleming and the SSC crew for providing a nice meal after the race at “X” dock at Aqualand.
The next race will be sponsored by BFSC on Saturday, Oct 19. The Skipper’s meeting will be in the Pig Tales parking lot at Aqualand at 11am. At that time, members of BFSC will announce the course and starting area. All LARC races will begin at 1pm.
Sorry for the delay, but it some time to straighten out some of the scores, since some people did not notice the postponement flag at 1pm which indicated that everyone was to add 15 min to their start time. So I hope everything is correct now, but if not send me an email.
Look forward to seeing everyone on Sat, Oct 19. If anyone is interested in seeing the LARC scores on-line, go to LLSCKeelboat.com/LARC.
