WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 10 • SEPTEMBER 13, 2017
What a great ending to our summer series of sailing and what a great summer of wind. Awards will be given next Wednesday at LLSC at 7pm.
It has been an exciting series and the ending has been just as thrilling. The competition in the Melges 24 fleet has been fierce. McKenzie and Umberger have been fighting it out all year (isn’t that the thrill of one-design) and the last race was the tiebreaker. They both had 3 firsts and 2 seconds and were tied at 10 points apiece, whoever got the better score in the last race was going to be the winner for the series. As I was watching their race unfold, all of a sudden Krantz pops into first, with Brent M. in second and Gary U. in third. I was astounded and then watched the match race unfold. It didn’t matter who was in first as long as Brent didn’t let Gary get in front of him. Congratulations to everyone who kept coming back week after week no matter what Mother Nature threw at them. A special thanks to everyone (especially the crews for making it all work) for all their hard work on race committee and made this series fun and entertaining. Look forward to seeing everyone at the awards next Wed and then I hope you will come back for some exciting Fall racing in the Wed Night Encore Series starting Sept 27 at 6:30 pm. The Aux fleet will provide food after every race, so join us at the clubhouse. And don’t forget the BFSC Open on Sept 30-Oct 1. Happy Sailing- Dana |
We would like to invite you to our Awards Party next Wednesday 9/20 at 7pm. We have scheduled the party to be at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club Clubhouse again this year and would like to thank them for this event location.
In order to properly prepare for this event, would you kindly email me your best guess as to how many of you and your crew will be attending? This will help us get enough beer and food. Please respond by Monday the 18th. And I am sure that some of you will help us taste the beer early to make sure it is good enough to serve. We have trophies for the 2nd series of Wednesday nights, and the Overall's and, of course, all the stories. -Randy Phillips |

Thanks to KC Shannon, Tommy Sawchuk, Rick and Lorrie Keith and company for doing RC. We certainly did benefit from the winds of the passing Harvey and had great night for racing. Watch the Melges 24 fleet next week, they have a tie for first place. Exciting!!! Get ready for the Hurricane escapees and winds from 25-40mph Mon and possibly Tues.
We also want you to make plans to attend the AISC Series 2 and Overall awards on Wed Sept 20. I heard John has some great entertainment planned. Happy sailing and make sure your boat is secured (extra spring lines) for upcoming winds. Dana |

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 8 • AUGUST 29, 2017
|
Thanks to the crew of Alex Mazurek and Ron Spiers for doing RC.
I have never liked sailing in the rain, it means wet deck and usually no wind. But this night was different. I commend the race committee for persevering and waiting for the weather to change which it did and then starting a race in very nice conditions. Happy sailing, Dana |
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 7 • AUGUST 23, 2017
|
Thanks to Jim Kingery, Francis Ivanisky and company for doing RC. It was great wind to help make the contests in each of the fleets to become more competitive. Now that we only have 3 more races until the end of the series, the battle between the top 3 boats in the fleets is starting to become fierce. In the Small Sport fleet there is a 3 point difference in the top spot and a 4 point difference between 2nd and 3rd place. The Low Spin fleet continues to be close with a 3 point difference between 1st / 2nd and 2nd and 3rd places are 3.7 points from each other . The Mid Spin fleet is pulling out the stops with the J24 fleet. 1st and 2nd are only 3.7 points from each other. The race in the High Spin fleet is most competitive of all. 1st and 2nd place are only 2 points from each other.
Good luck to everyone in the next 3 races. Begin to make plans to sail in the Encore Series Sept 27 Happy Sailing- Dana |
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 5 • AUGUST 09, 2017
|
Thanks to Mark Turner and company for RC this week.
Doing RC gives you an opportunity to watch the race unfold for each fleet. The starts were not as exciting as last week, but the on the course tactics were awesome. Once again, the wind was so tricky that 2 boats can round the mark close together and one boat gets lifted and the other not. The truly memorable event in the race was close to the finish line, a fake gybe was made and caused the competition to suddenly gybe. These two boats finished within 7 seconds of each other. And with the magic of GoPro we have it on video (it is about 1 hour in). Love this weather, Dana |

Thanks to Robin Terrell, Rick Smith and company for doing RC. What a summer we have had, wind for every race. The wind for this race was from the east, usually inconsistent at best and crazier than usual for this race. It was one of those nights, where the wind shifted for every fleet start. You watched the fleets that started and made a plan, but as soon as the next fleet started you revised your plan again. And this continued for every fleet. When you looked at the wind on the race course and wondered if there really was no wind in those bare spots ahead of you or was it in the upper reaches above the water. When are they going to make those special eyeglasses so you can see the wind, no matter where it is. Oh well… After race #5, I will start posting the overall results. Happy sailing, Dana |
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 3 • JULY 26, 2017
|
Thanks to Tom Graham, Kurt Schurenberg and company for RC. Every time I race I am reminded of a valuable lesson. This week was no different. As we were trying to go to weather of Fleet 3 (under spinnaker), we were not paying enough attention to the dramatic change in weather and wind velocity and were caught flat-footed when it hit. Spinnaker snapping, boat heeling, spinnaker in the water and foredeck trying his best not to fall off the boat, made for an exhilarating ride from X to D. I imagine Fleet 3, who were going upwind from D to X, had some moments when they thought we were just plain lunatics. After the race, I reminded myself to not only pay attention to what is going on in the race but what is happening in general further down or up the lake.
Safe sailing, Dana |
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 2 • JULY 19, 2017
Thanks to Jim Chinik and crew for RC this week. The series is already starting to heat up in the Small Sport, Low Spin and Cruiser fleet. The contest in the Melges 24 fleet (small sport) is tight with the top 3 boats with 1 point difference between Umberger, McKenzie and Krantz. In the Low Spin fleet, the perennial battle between McCarthy and Morang/Pritchard is providing weekly on the water entertainment. There is only 1 point separating the top two boats in the Cruiser fleet, Chink and Schurenberg. Good luck to all participants.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 2 - 1 • JULY 12, 2017

Thanks to Russ Marshall and David Wright for RC this week. It was a dark and stormy night… or so we thought, but RC bravely set up an ambitious course (the best they could considering “C” is gone) and thankfully shortened the race when the storm winds never appeared.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE 1 - 10 • JUNE 21, 2017
|
It was an unusual evening with the fleets using “B” as the weather mark. It was decent wind to the weather mark and then everybody struggled to make it back to the shortened finish. The RC did a fine job of talking the weather gods into holding the rain back until the race was finished. Thanks to Linda Webster and Mike Iuvone for doing RC this week.

Thanks to Stefan Schulze for RC this week. It looked like it was going to storm but in the end we had a beautiful sunset and only a smattering of raindrops.

Thanks to Tedd Meinersmann and Chris Webster for RC this week. Someone was sporting a new shiny new red kite.....e'hem Iniki. Fleets 3, 4, 5 and 6 appreciated the short finish at sunset as the wind left us.
